The Swerford Insight

Swerford

is a charming village of ironstone cottages, which occupies a secluded valley to the north east of Chipping Norton. It is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086. St Mary's church, founded at the beginning of the 13th century, is a prominent feature, and stands in the centre of the village next to the motte and bailey - the remains of a 12th century castle built during the civil war between Stephen and Matilda.

Several artists and craftspeople live in this delightful village, and painting, photography, pottery, furniture making and floral artistry are all represented. Swerfordians regularly participate in the Oxfordshire Artweeks program. At least one MBE lives in the village.

The village hall is the venue for regular activities and meetings held by social and educational groups within the locality.

Swerford provides an ideal base for visitors to the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. There are several holiday cottages, and a playing field for children.
