Swift Boxes at St Marys

RICHARD HALL writes:

I have fitted two nest boxes in the west facing side of the church steeple.

The houses where these magnificent birds have nested in the past have been gradually 'done up' leaving the swifts short of nesting sites. They need to be high up so that they can drop away from the nest to get flying speed.

Church towers have been recognised as being ideal replacements and, with the permission of the Oxford Diocese, we now have some.

There will be some work required to encourage the birds to use these when they arrive from Africa in early May.
