Swerford Quiz 2008

On Saturday 23rd February ten teams competed in the Annual Swerford Quiz for . . the fun of it!

The evening began with the quizmaster explaining the rules. An element of democracy was introduced and topics for rounds were selected from a hat. There were groans from the teams at the choices.

Team names had already been decided, but there were some hasty modifications when it was revealed that a prize would be awarded for the most apt, the winner to be chosen by a vote.

There were some impossible questions.

The teams were lured into playing their joker by round titles such as 'In the kitchen', or 'Quotations' or 'Television, Films and the Media.'

But even sensible sounding sections contained some ridiculous questions, which meant that good guesswork was invaluable.

After four rounds of twenty questions supper promised to be a welcome relief. But even over lamb or chestnut casserole the brain cells were exercised. Nor could the mince pies and cream be enjoyed in peace.

Imagination was called for. The captions from ten original valentine cards had been partially blanked out and teams were required to supply the missing words. Many were surprisingly accurate - some were unprintable!

After the break it was back to work with 'General Knowledge of the Year 2007', and 'Anniversaries' and a round entitled 'Annes and Anthonys.

Scores were totted up and in fact all the totals were very close, with everyone acquitting themselves well against what were clearly at times trying odds. 'Where are the proper questions?' someone asked.

Although scoring was generally pretty even, a clear winner emerged. The prize went to Myrtle's Marauders shown here in the background, with the Oxymorons in front.

With team names such as 'The Chapel Hill Chumps','The Dark Horses', 'The Baa Baas', 'Like it's Proper Mental', 'Are We Bovered' and 'Child Assisted' to choose from the Quizmaster was glad he had decided to put it to the vote. There was a tie. As 'The Oxymorons' had a higher score in the quiz than rivals 'The Backside Wanderers',they took the prize.

It was great to see an event so well attended and as everyone had been such good sports a consolation prize was awarded to each team.

A big thank you to all who participated.
