A Landscape Detective in Swerford

What medieval secrets does Swerford hold? A talk given by Brian Durham on Saturday November 14th in Swerford village hall suggested some of the answers.

Brian Durham was principal archaologist with Oxford Archaology Ltd for thirty years before becoming Oxford City Council's archaologist. In this time he worked on four Oxfordshire Norman castle sites and two mills.

He used this experience for some detective work on medieval Swerford. His presentation was thought provoking and raised a lively discussion with and amongst the audience.

Few definite conclusions were reached but interest was stirred and for some time to come those who attended will be viewing familiar Swerford landmarks in a new light - in particular the Old Griffin. Was it a medieval mill? If it wasn't where was Swerford Mill?

The debate is likely to run and run.
