Henry James Miller. G.C.

Listed as a casualty of the Second World War is one Henry James Miller G.C. Henry was born in Poole, Dorset on 28th November 1900 and served in the Royal Navy. He lost his life on 29th April 1940 when his submarine Unity was on patrol in the North Sea.
The submarine was in collision in the dark with the Norwegian freighter Atle Jarl and sank within minutes. When the order to abandon ship was given by the submarine commander, Henry and Lt.Low assisted every other member of the crew to escape but perished themselves.
They were both postumously awarded the Medal of the Military Division of The Most Excellent Order of The British Empire. This award was exchanged for the George Cross in September 1940.

Why is the name of someone who was born in Poole and lived in Portsmouth shown on the War Memorial in Long Hanborough and the memorial stone in the Parish church?
Henry Miller used to visit his cousin who lived at the Hand and Shears. During one of his visits he met Vida Maud Woodward. Eventually they married and for a time lived in Church Hanborough.
They had a daughter, Mary, who attended school in Church Hanborough. Mary now lives in Portsmouth.

Vida is shown on page 63 of the book "The Changes Faces of Bladon, Church Hanborough and Long Hanborough". Also in the photograph are her two brothers George and Bert Woodward.

Bert was a Lance Corporal in the South Staffordshire Regiment and died aged 21. His name is shown on the Helles Memorial. His brother George was a Private in the 1st Batt. Oxfordshire and Bucks Light Infantry and died of his wounds in Mesopotamia.
