HANBOROUGH SHOW 13th SEPTEMBER 2008

RULES

The following rules apply to entries for the Hanborough Show, which is held in the Pavilion and the Playing Fields.

As always, the newest exhibitor is as welcome to take part and as likely to succeed as the most experienced.
The more participants there are, the greater the variety of exhibits. This enhances the enjoyment for everyone.

1. ENTRY FORMS: All entry forms, accompanied by the correct entry fees, must be submitted to the Committee Secretary before 8pm on Wednesday 10th September

Late Entries will only be accepted up to 9pm on Thursday 11th September.

2. ENTRY FEES:
Adult: 25p per exhibit (late entry:50p per exhibit)
Children: 10p per exhibit (late entry:20p per exhibit)
Children may exhibit in the classes not classified as 'children's but the entry fee will be as for adults i.e. 25p or 50p for late entry.

3. EXHIBITING ON THE DAY: Exhibits must be staged between 8.30am and 10.30am.
Every exhibit must bear a show card available from the secretary on the day.
THE SHOW AREA MUST BE VACATED BY 10.30am FOR JUDGING.


Please note that no exhibits can be accepted by the Secretary before 8.30am on the day of the Show.

4. All entries are open entries and therefore open to anybody who lives in the parish and adjacent parishes within 3 miles of Christ Church in Long Hanborough.

5. Exhibitors may exhibit only one entry in any one class.

6. All produce grown in Section 1: Vegetables and Section IIa: Flowers, must have been grown in the exhibitors own garden, allotment or greenhouse.

7. No two members from the same household may enter produce from the same garden in the same class except for Class 45 (Children's Produce).

8. Where the size of an exhibit is specified in any Class, please note that anything larger than this size will be disqualified.

9.Class 108: The Great Disaster (Adults only). Please note that entry is on the day only. Entries will not be accepted beforehand.

10 All classes called "You've made it, let's see it!" are for any items not covered by other classes in that section or age group. Any items that can be entered in another class in that section or age group will be disqualified.

11 All entries in the Children's section should be the children's own work. Any items which appear to have had excessive adult help may be disqualified by the judge.

12 SECTION VI: PHOTOGRAPHY:
All photographs should be a maximum size of 7"x5". They can be mounted on a display card that is no more than 1"larger all round to a maximum size of 8" by 6".
Class 102: Telling a story - a series of three photographs. All photos should be either landscape or portrait. Photographs can be mounted separately (as above), or on one piece of card with no more than 1" between photos and no more than 1" larger all round.

13. The Committee accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to any exhibits.

14. The Hall will be open to exhibitors and the public between 2pm and 4pm. Any exhibits not being auctioned (see rule 15) must be removed between 4pm and 5pm. The Committee reserves the right to dispose of any items left after 5pm.

15. The Committee appreciate any exhibits to be auctioned in aid of funds.Exhibits to be auctioned must bear a coloured sticker available from the Secretary on the day.

16. The Judges decision is final: they may decline to award any prize card if they consider the exhibit of insufficient merit.

17. Points are awarded as follows: 1st=3 points, 2nd=2 points, 3rd=1 point.

18. In the event of a tie, the exhibitor gaining most first prizes will be the winner.

19. Cups will be awarded at the Show at approximately 4pm. They are to be returned to the Secretary in good condition in time for the next Show.

20. Exhibitors must provide their own plates, vases, etc.

21. Garnishing with parsley is allowed, as is a black base cloth.

22. The Committee reserves the right to inspect by appointment the gardens of entrants in Sections I and II before or after the Show.

23. Final interpretation of the rules rests with the Show Committee.

All sections are open to any person resident in Hanborough Parish or adjacent villages, (villages within 3 miles of CHRIST CHURCH in Long Hanborough)

Section I: PRODUCE

Vegetables

1. Two cobs of sweetcorn
2. Five potatoes (red or white-any one variety)
3. Three beetroot
4. Three Carrots
5. Three Onions
6. The heaviest potato
7. Six runner beans
8. Longest runner bean
9. A squash
10. Three courgettes
11. Heaviest marrow
12. Six tomatoes (red or yellow-any one variety)
13. Ten tomatoes (cherry)
14. The ugliest vegetable
15. Any unscheduled vegetable (e.g. 3 garlic, 2 cucumbers)
16. Vase of mixed herbs (minimum of 3 kinds)
17. a display of salad vegetables, not less than three varieties(30cmx30cm max)

Fruit

18. four apples (dessert),all one variety
19. four apples(cooking), all one variety
20. four pears, all one variety
21. any unscheduled fruit (e.g. 3 peaches)
22. a display of fruit, not less than three varieties (30cmx30cm)maximum

SECTION IIa: FLOWERS

23. one specimen rose in a vase
24. one scented rose in a vase.
25. one gladiolus in a vase (from any group)
26. three dahlia blooms of the same variety(size: up to 52mm diameter)
27. three dahlia blooms of the same variety (size: 53- 100mm diameter)
28. three dahlia blooms of the same variety (size: over 100mm diameter)
29. three stems of any chrysanthemum (either single or multiple blooms)
30. three stems of penstemon blooms (of the same variety)
31. three stems of aster blooms (of the same variety)
32.five blooms of any unscheduled annual (of the same variety)
33. vase of cut flowers, excluding dahlias (three species or three varieties of one species. NOTE: The inclusion of foliage from plants other than the ones being exhibited is not permitted)
34. four fuchsia blooms in a vase. (of the same variety)
35. a pot plant
36. a cactus plant
37. a vase of decorative grasses(minimum of three species)

SECTION IIb: FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

38. a miniature flower arrangement(10cm x 10cm maximum)
39. an arrangement with the theme 'tickled pink'
40. an arrangement on the theme of the Beijing Olympics
41.'footloose and fancy free'- a decorated shoe (30cm x 30cm)

SECTION IIc: CHILDREN'S FLOWERS AND PRODUCE(11 years and under)

42. a broad bean in a jar
43. a miniature garden in a contain (30cm x 30cm maximum)
44. a flower arrangement
45. an item of produce you have grown yourself.

SECTION III: CHILDREN

PRE- SCHOOL under 5s

For those whose efforts come to nothing. Entries may be a failure in any category.
If it's very bad, it might win a prize!

RECIPES

Dough Cookie Recipe for Class 54 (5 - 7 years)

300g/10oz plain flour plus extra for sprinkling
250g/8oz soft butter diced
150g/5oz caster sugar
1 large egg yolk
2 teasp vanilla essence
1/2 teasp pf salt

1 Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl
2 Add the egg yolk and vanilla essence and beat the mixture until it is smooth
3 Next add the flour and salt and mix everything together to form a smooth dough
4 Mould the dough into a ball, wrap it in cling-film, and leave it in the fridge for 30 minutes
5 Roll the dough to about .5cm (1/4 inch)thick on a surface sprinkled with flour
6 Cut out cookies and put them on a non-stick or lined baking trays
7 Heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas mark 4. Cook the cookies for 12 minutes until golden. Leave them on a wire rack to cool
8 Decorate your cookies

Fudgy Banana Muffin recipe for Men's Cookery (Class 88)

250g/9oz self raising flour
100g/4oz fudge
75g/3oz butter
100g/4oz soft light brown sugar
2 medium eggs
2 medium ripe bananas
2 tabs clear honey
125mils/4.5fl oz milk
1 teasp baking powder
1 teasp vanilla essence

A 12 hole muffin or deep bun tray. Paper muffin cases.

1 Heat the oven to 190C/375F, Gas mark 5. Put a paper muffin case into each hole in the muffin tray
Sift the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl
2 Put the fudge onto a chopping board and cut into chunks. Add the sugar and fudge to the bowl and stir them in.
Make a hollow in the mixture
3 Put the butter in a saucepan. Heat it gentle over a low heat until the butter has melted. Remove the pan from the heat and add the milk and vanilla essence
4 Peel the bananas and put them into a small bowl. Mash them with a fork until they are fairly smooth
Break the eggs into another bowl and beat them with a fork
5 Add the bananas and the beaten eggs to the pan. Stir the ingredients in the pan. Then, pour the mixture into the hollow in the dry ingredients
6 Stir everything with a wooden spoon, until it is just mixed together, the mixture should still look quite lumpy. Then spoon it into the paper cases
7 Bake the muffins for 20mins until they are firm and well risen. Leave them in the tray for 5 minutes. Brush the tops with honey and lift onto a wire rack.

Dog Show - Additional notes

Please note: The new Class ("Dog most like Owner")is open to all dogs and will be judged by the Hanborough Show Committee

Classes will take place in the order above, beginning with the "Dog most like Owner"
Judge (Classes1-12)will be Mrs Jane Brock
Pedigree Dogs can enter all Classes 1-12
Non- Pedigree can enter Novelty Classes 5- 12
Advice: Pedigree puppies in Puppy Class only, not Open Class competing with adult dogs

Although there will be owners familiar with showing their dogs, for those who are not, please come along and enter too.
