A Finstock walk

A picture for Finstock-News

Topples Wood forms part of a short walk starting from the Plough at the Bottom. Walk up Wilcote Riding and along the road for a quarter of a mile, turning left at a gate marked Hunts Copse. the path goes downhill and into Topples Wood. At one point the path is muddy all year round, probably because of bad drainage. It then narrows to a grassy stretch, which is also often muddy. On your right you can see Fawler and the railway line.

The path goes steeply down to the bottom of the valley. At this point you can go down through the field on the right to the Evenlode, cross the river and end up in Fawler; or you can turn left and wander up Dark Lane. The lane is much used by the local riding school, and at the bottom of the V shape created by the horses there are stones which must have been the foundation of the old road that connects Finstock with Fawler. As you go up Dark Lane, you see a steep slope on the left (blocked alas by a barbed wire fence) where many cowslips grow. Go through the remains of a gate and the path becomes stonier. A surprise awaits: as you progress up the lane past the pumping station you suddenly find yourself at the Bottom again, right opposite the Plough!
