£80,000 for the new roof

for St Peter's church house and vestry?

Rain on the Open Gardens weekend only reinforced the case!

Why do we need a new roof?

Because the old one is letting in a great deal of water, cannot be repaired and must be replaced immediately.

The size of the problem

is bigger than it seems from the car park. Here is an aerial view of the church, with presbytery and sacristy outlined in white.

Why a pitched roof?

Because we have had 4 flat roofs in 40 years. They only last 10- 15 years. In the long run a pitched roof is cheaper even if the building work will be more disruptive to those who live there.

Are there any other advantages?
* It will give the house proper insulation which will reduce the church's expenditure on heating in the future.
* It will insulate the house from aeroplane noise.
* It will provide a storage space in the new loft.
* It will look much better from the outside as it will match the church.

Why is it so much more than we first thought?

Because the first price was a very inaccurate and rough estimate and did not include all that needed doing.
Can't we find a cheaper builder?
The three builders who tendered all came up with approximately the same price.

How much have we raised so far?
Just over £48,000 including a generous donation of £30,000 from the Tolkien Trust.
How much have we got on Interest Free Loans?
£32,500 - more below.

Looking back ...

The temporary wooden building that served as the body of the church until 1963.
You could rebuild the whole thing for £40,000 in those days!
