The Breast Cancer
Care Ribbon Walk 2005 was tremendously
popular. 1,854 people took
part in a great day's walking through
the Oxfordshire Cotswolds,
finishing at Blenheim Palace. In total
£750,000 was
raised.
On 10
June the winning formula
was repeated, with a
2nd event due in the Peak District on
24 June.
1500-2000 participants
were expected at each event and
there was a 10-mile and a 20-mile
option. Extract from Oxfordshire route
follows:
“...
Starting in the
grounds of Blenheim
Palace, the 18th
century baroque home to the 11th Duke
of Marlborough and birthplace
of Sir Winston Churchill, we will walk
along the lake and the River
Glyme through oak-lined paths to Combe
Gate.
Wandering on through
fields and quiet country lanes,
passing the villages of Long
Hanborough and Church Hanborough, we
enter the traditional village of
Eynsham, the site of a famous
Benedictine abbey during the Middle
Ages.
After Eynsham, we join the
Thames Path National Trail and
follow the river through meadows and
past woods until we reach the
village of Wolvercote on the outskirts
of Oxford ...”
EYNSHAM
Eynsham is about a
third of the way into the 20 mile
route. It was the 2nd rest
stop and was promoted as a
Cheering Station as well.
‘Cheering
Stations’ are situated at key
locations along the route and
offer friends and family the
opportunity to cheer on the walkers as
they come through.
