The Berry Hall

The Sports Hall, named the Berry Hall after former school Head Bill Berry, is suitable for games such as indoor cricket, badminton, football, basketball and volleyball, as well as aerobics. It provides a modern facility for Bartholomew School during school hours, and will be open to the public in the evenings and at weekends.

Working in Partnership

The Centre was funded by the Big Lottery, Oxfordshire County Council, West Oxfordshire District Council and Eynsham Parish Council. Image shows County Council Chair Liz Brighouse with Bill Berry at the official opening on 23 November.
It is run by Nexus Community (formerly Wycombe Leisure Ltd), who manage West Oxfordshire District Council’s portfolio of leisure facilities.

Phasing - March 2007

The external skins of block and brickwork and the installation of aluminium roof sheeting are almost complete.
One logistical problem was solved in an innovative way as the top layer of roof sheets needed to be formed in a radius to exactly match the curve of the roof. This requires a large area in which to roll the roof sheets to the correct profile, and is often undertaken off site. Due to the difficult narrow site access and restricted working area, Beard and their specialist sub contractor, Keith Lodge Roofing, arranged for a 100 tonne crane to suspend a rolling machine and roll of raw sheeting material within a steel container at roof height - some 10 metres in the air. The sheets simply rolled out of the container, across the roof into place, which took less than a day to complete.

The replacement can be seen taking shape as the steelwork is erected. The piled foundations and concrete ground beams were completed on time. Large deliveries for the project presented a major challenge, particularly the delivery of the 18m long beams for the main hall. Due to the narrow and congested nature of Clover Place and Back Lane, the deliveries of the steel frame and major items of plant had to be carefully surveyed and planned by Beard’s team of Construction Managers. The beams have recently successfully negotiated this difficult entry to the site and are now bolted in place.

The old sports hall was carefully demolished: demolition slideshow here

Background

The project is one of several constructed under the new Oxfordshire County Council Framework, where designers and a pre- selected contractor enter into early dialogue to discuss and agree design, costing and environmental issues, providing a more efficient delivery. More on costings here .
Beard, the contractor carrying out the works, is a local company based in Cumnor and Swindon, and has constructed three other new Sports Halls in Buckinghamshire. Along with the designers, Mouchel Parkman, Beard has also constructed new school facilities in Carterton and Woodstock.
Mouchel Parkman, based in Abingdon, is cost and design consultant for the project. Mouchel Parkman delivers professional property services in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council: architectural and structural design, building services, maintenance consultancy, surveying, valuation and estate management.
