At the Annual (mayor making) meeting of the Council on 18th May 2009 after the Mayor (Cllr Jarratt) had reported on the past year’s activities, Cllr Mrs Graves proposed ,Cllr Mrs Williams seconded, and the Council approved the election of Cllr Dixon as our Mayor for 2009-10 whilst Cllr Mrs Burrows gave a vote of thanks to the outgoing Mayor and Deputy Mayor

The Mayor responded to his election :

“I thank my fellow Councillors for the Honour to represent our Town as Mayor.

I have lived and worked in Chipping Norton all my life and have seen a number of changes over the years, essentially Chipping Norton is a terrific town to live in, with many projects and opportunities for development and improvement. The West Oxfordshire local development framework-core strategy suggests an expansion of 800 dwellings in Chipping Norton We welcome this expansion but we also need to consider suitable employment possibilities to prevent an imbalance u of jobs to housing to enable the Town to grow as a working, thriving Cotswold Town.

As a community some of the areas I feel we need to concentrate on in particular are facilities and activities for the youth of the town, encouraging and supporting local businesses, maintaining our local services, preserving the traditional character of the town and also continuing to encourage community spirit.

We are pleased to see the new Hospital and Care Home is under construction and are eagerly awaiting its completion.

The Mayor’s charity for the following year will be The Lawrence Home Nursing Team. They provide an invaluable service to the town which is greatly admired and appreciated.

Lastly as Mayor I hope to encourage unity on the council so this in turn will benefit the town and we can look forward to the future.”

The Town

- Chipping Norton is a beautiful market town in the far north of the county with a population of nearly 6,000 people.

Chipping Norton is a great place to live and work. Right in the middle of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - in the shadow of the Rollright Stones. Small enough to preserve a real identity. Great sense of community. Terrific facilities. Its a perfect base for touring the beautiful North Oxfordshire Cotswolds. We are surrounded by rolling hills and idyllic limestone villages. Wonderful walking and cycling country. Oxford and Stratford are within 20 miles. There's a good bus service to both of them.

There's a lot going on in the town. A superb school. Our own community hospital - with a new modern one soon to be built. The Theatre, book shops, art galleries, a museum and antique shops.

The town has several supermarkets and many smaller specialist shops. Excellent food and local ales in over twenty pubs and restaurants. Chipping Norton serves as an important centre for a wide surrounding area - offering excellent healthcare services and every kind of professional service - legal,financial, architectural. Market Day on Wednesday is particularly busy.

Chipping Norton has one of the finest Parish Churches in the County, a mediaeval Guildhall, some quaint back lanes and beautiful Georgian houses.

Sports facilities are outstanding. There is a brilliant new Leisure Centre (thanks to the District Council). A succesful Rugby Club playing in a senior League. A semi- professional football club. Our own Golf course. Indoor and outdoor bowling rinks. Horse riding and angling are easily accessed.
