This is the web site of Carterton Town Oxfordshire England. Carterton is the main housing area for RAF Brize Norton. and as such has a predominance of service personnel. which means the inhabitants are constantly changing, although there is a hard core of permanent residence who's families have been in Carterton from its inception in about 1900 when it was then an off shoot of Black Bourton. There are also quite a lot of retired RAF personnel who came to the end of their service careers when at Brize Norton and have adopted it, and made their place of retirement. Carterton is a unique town in so much as it only came into existence at the beginning of the last century, and as such, up to now its origins have been with in living memory, there are very few of the first settlers still alive and that makes the late Johnny Browns memories, which are recorded on the site which can be accessed from the link above, of such importance. prior to that the area where Carterton is was just farm land and was part of the parish of Black Bourton, so you will excuse the many references to Black Bourton. With the growth of the airfield Carterton very soon out grew out of its humble beginnings and finally was not only separated from Black Bourton in name but physically as well when the runway was extended and severed the road between the two villages. There can not be many communities where the history of a town can be so well and accurately documented
