There were five beneficiaries at the awards evening held by the Carterton Educational Trust when 520 was distributed in grants. This brought to more than 1,500 the funds awarded by the Trust during the previous 18 months to groups and individuals in Carterton engaged in projects of an educational nature.

At this presentation the Trust Treasurer, Rev. Roger Billings, and Chairman, John Davies, gave cheques to people engaged in courses as diverse as a Diploma in Social Work and a degree in Computer Studies, as well as a donation to Carterton Gymnastics Club for the purchase of new equipment.

During his address, the Trust Chairman said the committee was delighted to continue encouraging individuals and groups from the town in their various educational pursuits. He made it clear, however, that help was limited by a serious lack of funds available to the Trust, which, unlike similar bodies in older, neighbouring towns, does not enjoy the advantage of having a wealthy benefactor.

This has been a problem for the Trust since its foundation in 1994 but with the help of one of its Patrons, Lord Hurd of Westwell, a major fundraising programme was being organised for the autumn.

With the support of youth and adult groups, schools and business people in the town, the Trust hopes to achieve a sound financial base which will enable it to realise its Millennium Aim of supporting the education of citizens of Carterton, of all ages, well into the 21st Century.
