| ALVESCOT - DERIVATION OF NAME Bodleian Library (MS.T. of Oxon., d.218, fol. 13) ALVESCOTE Anciently named from St. Allege of Elphege. There were two persons of this name, both reputed Saints, and both Bishops of the West Saxons. St. Alfege or Elphegus the Bald was uncle of St. Dunstan, a monk of Glastonbury became Bishop in 934 and died in 957. St. Alfege the Martyr was a monk of Derehurst and of Bath - became Bishop in Nov. 984, installed 28 Oct, following, and was made Abp, of Canterbury in 1006. It was most likely the former of these who had his Cote or hermitage at the place which commemorates his name. . |
